March has rolled around, and with Easter just a matter of weeks away, many people may be planning ahead for the long Easter weekend. As two bank holidays will fall at this time in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, some people may see their Universal Credit and other benefits payments affected.

April 10, 2020 is known as Good Friday, and this is a bank holiday in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The second bank holiday associated with this particular weekend is Easter Monday on April 13 – however this is only a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

If a person is expecting a benefit payment over Easter, they will get the money early, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has explained.

Over the bank holidays, Jobcentre opening times will differ to usual, and this means some payments will be rearranged in order to make sure that people get their benefits on a day when offices and phone lines are open.

Lords Minister for the Department for Work and Pensions, Baroness Stedman-Scott said: “Everyone should be able to make the most of the upcoming bank holiday without worry of when they’ll receive their benefit payment.

“That’s why we’re making some payments early, to ensure no one has to wait for the money they are entitled to.”

So, what dates are affected?

On Friday April 10 and Monday April 13, all offices and phone lines are closed, the DWP said.

If a person gets paid early, the DWP says the recipient will get the usual payment amount.

However, the DWP does say that a person’s amount may change if they have a change in circumstance.

Those affected by these changes to payment dates in April 2020 do not need to take any action to ensure they’re paid early.
